Taking about the making of the movie, Dulquer told ANI, “The most memorable thing of our gangster films of either been some great dramas or they’ve been out and out messy entertainers. And when I heard the script for the first time, I feel like it had the drama and the story that this genre really needs all of the characters in the film, like if you remove one character you can’t tell the same story.”

3. Ramachandra Boss & Co (Thriller)

The theme is not new, but Haneef’s second outing with Nivin Pauly after Mikhael had all the ingredients to make it an interesting watch. However, what the director-scenarist gives you is a film riddled with problems. In 148 minutes, all that you get is a movie that is all style and no substance.

4. Sashiyum Sakunthalayum (Drama)

This periodical film, akin to ‘Ennu Ninte Moideen,’ unfolds against the backdrop of tutorial colleges in the years 1970-75. It weaves a narrative around the rivalry between two parallel colleges, interwoven with the love story of Sasi, an English teacher, and Sakunthala, a math teacher. “Sasiyum Sakunthalayum” presents a blend of romance and suspense, with Ashwin Kumar, known for his prowess in Malayalam and Tamil cinema, portraying the role of college principal Sudhakaran. Shaheen Siddique takes on the character of English teacher Sasi, while R. S. Vimal embodies Palisha Paramu. Neha, also known as Amy, brings to life the role of Sakunthala, the math teacher.

5. Nalla Nilavulla Rathri (Thriller)

The premise was interesting. It’s about a group of friends going on a trip to Shimoga for a business deal and ending up facing a horrific night for no apparent reason, initially. The writer succeeded in exploring grey shades of people and things like jealousy, greed, selfishness and apathy were all seen through the characters. There is no villain or hero and it’s all about survival. The initial bits of how they get chased and how they try and survive will have one hooked. However, the cause of the incidents are more or less predictable at a certain point in the movie, even before it comes to light before the characters.

6. Kurukkan (Comedy)

Kurukkan by Jayalal Divakaran is a mixture of comedy, murder mystery and investigation, at a time when genre lines are being breached in the most unconventional ways. To make the audience laugh while a murder trial is on is no small feat. Kurukkan is hilarious and entertaining but could have done with a bit more polishing.

7. Amala (Thriller)

Amala is a decent watch. It tells the story of serial killings and how top police officer Akbar (Tamil actor Srikanth) cracks the murder cases. Set in high range and Kochi, the movie has an intense story. It gives a clear idea about the killer and the backstory of the psychopath is convincing. His childhood is shot well giving detailing to his character.

8. Vishudha Mejo (Romance)

Vishuda Mejo is a simple love story with a straightforward protagonist, that we don’t see nowadays. With his shyness and inferiority complex, he reminds you of film characters from four decades back, with complexes and insecurities. It is with Jeena’s help that he overcomes this to a certain extent. Mejo’s character has been done quite convincingly by Dinoy Poulose, though the character’s shift to a darker personality wasn’t handled convincingly. At the same time the movie has been taken forward by the female lead, Lijo Mol Jose, who after her commendable performance in Jai Bhim, plays a village belle with freshness and lovability.
